Who better than an author to volunteer to coach young writers?
Writing Coaches of Montana seeks community members in Flathead County to participate in its coaching program with the mission of helping local students improve their writing skills. Specifically, the program seeks to help students think critically about their writing assignments so they can become confident and competent writers across disciplines. Volunteers select sessions that fit into their own schedule.
During the 2021-2022 school year, coaches may coach in-person at schools or online using Google Meet to conduct sessions with students. Coaches can choose their preference of in-person or virtual coaching. In August of 2020, in response to COVID-19, Writing Coaches of Montana developed an online coaching program that meets FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) student privacy requirements and uses the Google Suite for Nonprofits.
Cassie Sheets, the program’s Executive Director, along with me, Jeanne Wdowin, is running a coaching program in the following Flathead county schools during fall 2021: Whitefish High School, Whitefish Middle School, Muldown Elementary School, and potential additional schools across the Flathead, like Columbia Falls Middle and High, as well as Evergreen Middle school.
