Dear Authors of the Flathead Members,
I hope everybody’s writing is going well. As we reach the end of the calendar year there are some clerical matters to take care of.
Thursday, December 1, 7:00 pm, at FVCC room BC 141, we will hold election of officers for 2023. After over twenty years serving as treasurer, Tom Kuffel is stepping aside. Business owner and author Erika Putnam has offered to take over from Tom, who will remain as advisor as we make the transition. Tom is one of the long-serving members who’ve stewarded Authors as the vibrant repository of expertise and mentorship we know today. Past President Betty Kuffel will continue to be available in an advisory capacity, as is our webmaster, Dennis Foley. The other 2022 board members have offered to serve with the addition of Claudia Bennett as At Large member.
The proposed slate of officer is:
President – Craig Naylor
Vice-President – Susan Purvis
Treasurer – Erika Putnam
Secretary – Fran Tabor
At Large – Jess E. Owen
At Large – Claudia Bennett
All officers plan to be in attendance on Dec. 1. Claudia may be new to some of you. She is a business owner, occupational therapist, is currently writing a practical and spiritual guidebook for caregivers, and in the past led an oral history project of Catholic nuns.
If anyone wants to add their name for any of these offices, please let Craig know by November 27.
You will be able to vote three ways:
1) In person at the Dec. 1 meeting.
2) Through a proxy present at the Dec. 1 meeting. Email Craig by Wednesday, Nov. 30, with the name of your proxy.
3) Via email. Please request your ballot from Craig by November 30, which must be returned by midnight on Dec. 1.
Only paid-up members will be able to vote.
FVCC is no longer allowing this non-profit organization comprised of tax-paying citizens to use the facility as we have in the past. They will be charging a fee far beyond our capacity to pay. As a result, our 2023 conference will be held at the Red Lion from September 29 through October1.
To cover the increased costs of insurance, general operations, the prizes for the resurrected Student Writing Contest, and other expenses, the board elected to raise dues as of January 1, 2023 to $50 per year. You can join/continue at the current rate of $35 for 2023 until December 31 on the Authors website (under Membership), via check at the December meeting, or a check sent to the AotF mailbox, P.O. Box 7711, Kalispell, MT 59904. Membership benefits include our weekly meetings, voting in elections, supporting the Student Writing Contest, among others. The more members we have will attract a high level of outside teachers and presenters. We are a non-profit organization so any additional funds you choose to send our way will be both tax-deductible and deeply appreciated.
Beginning January 5, 2023, our weekly Thursday meetings will convene at A-1 Vacuum & Sewing Center, 140 W Center St, Kalispell. Thank you, Fran Tabor, for opening your business to us. Easy parking is available behind the business. Fran requests us to park in
back and use the back door.
Our annual Holiday Party is Thursday, December 22, 5:30 – 7:30 at A-1 Vacuum. Please bring an item to add to the potluck. There will be a gift exchange – books only, so find the best tomes you have to pass on to others. Fran requests us to park in back and use the back door.
And don’t forget our other December meetings: Dec. 8 with special guest TBA; December 15, when Dixon Rice hosts open readings. Both meet at FVCC room BC 141.
As we move to the Holiday season, the support and camaraderie of the Authors of the Flathead is one of the blessings for which I give thanks. I wish you all the most joyous of Holiday seasons.
