A Message from our President

April 10, 2019

Greetings from AOTF President,

Flathead River Writers Conference planning is going well. Save the dates: September 14th and 15th for an energizing informational experience and fun with other writers. Attendance is limited at 100. You will be able to register and pay online or by mail-in when you receive a brochure. We have confirmed eight skilled professional presenters. Check “Conference” on this website for presenter bios and the planned schedule.

The conference brochure is at the printer and will be available soon. Members will receive their brochures two weeks in advance of the major mailing to nonmembers. The advantage of early registration is a bonus to the first 24 people paid 2-day registrants who wish to have an appointment with, and critique by, either the agent or editor.

It is easy to join online through the website or pay your $25 to the treasurer at a meeting or mail a check to Authors of the Flathead, P.O. Box 7711, Kalispell, MT, 59904.

If you are a member and interested in having your publications added to the conference slideshow of member books, please forward a .jpg of the book covers and your link for purchase or website to me at bettykuffel@gmail.com. In addition, there will be a bookstore open at the conference venue where member books can be offered for sale by FVCC. You must contact the bookstore directly and make arrangements with them at least a month before the conference.

Thanks to the expertise of Alex Webb, an author-member, we have a new website with all sorts of fancy features. alex@websprockets.com.  One of these is “Recent Books By Our Members.” Please contact Dennis Foley dennis@dennisfoley.com  to add your book to the list. He will need a high-quality .jpg image of the cover and the link for purchase.

Authors of the Flathead will not sponsor a high school writing contest this school year due to late coordination issues. Instead, we are moving the timing to earlier in the next school year, giving more students time to participate.

Check the online schedule for meeting details and location. Occasionally, the college changes our room. We usually meet the first three Thursdays each month in the FVCC Broussard Building Room 118 at 7 p.m. Dennis Foley’s class on writing skills is on the first Thursday. Second Thursdays we have guest speakers on broad topics. In May, we have two guest speaker nights on great topics. On third Thursdays, don’t forget to share your work and get feedback from peers.

When attendance dropped off during winter months, the fourth Thursdays’ popular Write-Nite meetings were discontinued. At Write-Nites, people get together and work on their own projects in a quiet atmosphere with other writers. We may restart them in the fall if there is interest.

Please contact the website for updates where you can also leave comments or requests.

Happy writing.

Betty Kuffel
